After an hour or so, they had assigned positions for the
trip. The werewolf was captain with Gladius and the two dwarves under him. The
rest of the people were cooks—who also fished--, warriors, or deck hands. The
boat would be leaving in slightly less than 2 weeks. For the next two weeks,
which was two days in the actual world. For those two weeks, everyone worked as hard
as they could. When it was time for group to leave, the boat was filled with
weapons, food, and other gear they needed to survive. Everyone was on board and
ready but the captain was nowhere to be seen. About half an hour, the werewolf
showed up bleed out in four different places. Gladius ran up to him and healed
him. He said that he was attacked by mutant seagulls that were flying at the
under end of the docks. Just as he finished telling the crew that the seagulls
had two heads and talons, a group of about 100 of them flew over at them.

The Voyage- Chapter 1
Author's note: I am planning on writing a short book. It is a sequel to Norax and I will be posting chapter by chapter. In this series, I am working on vocabulary.
Adam’s
mother dialed 911. Since the station has two blocks away from the house, the
police arrived in a heartbeat, which Adam didn’t have many of left. They found
him and realized that he was shot in the shoulder.
Five
minutes ago a sniper had been laying on a neighbor’s roof, waiting for Julio
Stevens, the state’s governor. However, he had been sent to the wrong house.
Having mistaken Adam for Julio, he shot at Adam. Adam would have a bullet in
his head if he hadn’t bent over for the phone. Now, Adam was being rushed to
the hospital, while the police chased after what appeared to be the gunner’s
getaway car.
Once
Adam was hurried into ER, a needle was stuck in his arm and he blacked out.
Hours later, he woke up. He was scared out of his mind when he saw all of the
equipment around him. A nurse came in and told him that he would be alright but
it may be two to three weeks before he was released from the hospital. Once she
left, Adam noticed his entire surroundings. There were hundreds of balloons,
flowers, and gifts. Also, several things from his house had been brought there,
including his laptop. When his parents walked in, he asked for it. Once they
were gone, he proceeded to open Norax.
Gladius was sitting next to the two dwarves who were
sleeping. He woke them up. They informed him that a werewolf came by looking
for him. He said that he bought a large warship and wanted to sail out across
the sea and search for new wealth. He needed a experienced crew and asked if he
could host a tryout at Gladius’ arena. Gladius went to the hotel room where the
werewolf was. He said that he would allow him to use the arena under one
condition, that he and the dwarves could come too. The wolf agreed.
The next
day, Gladius, the dwarves, and the werewolf enter the host box while hundreds
of people were preparing to take part. The first test of the was battling.
After everyone was completed about 150 people were dismissed. Before noon,
everyone went through a target practice using a cannon. Then, the remaining 52
people were allowed a break while the arena was flooding using underground
water channels. 4 medium sized ships were brought in and each person was
assigned to a boat. There was room for 26 more people on the voyage so the
final two ships would make the cut.
Once
the battle had begun, it seemed that one ship was doomed. Two ship had headed
straight for it. However, this boat had 4 people that had crossbows. One ship
was smart and turned away once they saw the arrows raining down. However, the
second attacker wasn’t so bright. The captain had ran to the front with his
longbow but it didn’t have near enough range and he was hit. The boat was hit
in the side by a cannon ball and it quickly began to sink. Everyone abandoned
the ship and swam towards to player exit. The ship who had retreated were now
cornered in the middle of the arena. Both of the attacker shot at the ship but
only scored one hit. One ship shot far over and hit the other attacker. That
ship sank and the remaining two ships were crowned winners. The arena was
drained and the winners meet inside the owner suite.

Gone
Author's note: I am currently reading Gone by Micheal Grant. This is a response to that book.
As I was reading Gone, I realized it was a lot like the Hunger Games. In Gone, Everyone 15 or older disappears and the children are left to fend for themselves. As I read these books, I wondered what caused people to like Dystopian books.
At first, I thought it was all of the action that pulled readers in. After a while, I started to uncover the reason. It seems that the authors are writing as you almost were in the story. I also noticed this happens in the Maze Runner series. Once I came to this conclusion, another problem popped in my head. How do the authors crate this feeling?
It seemed you me that they used extremely great details, especially on people. This caused the felling that you knew the characters, therefore putting you in the book. Also, when some of the characters felt pain, it felt as you almost felt the pain to. This was because authors used details to make you either like or dislike certain character. Lastly, characters are around our age which is easier to relate to. It seems to me that we like Dystopia books mainly because of how the author writes.

Runaways
Author’s note: Today I was having trouble thinking of what
to write so I just decided to think as I write. Hopefully this might turn out
well.
In the
town of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Seth had been running from police for quite some
time. He had been driving his motorcycle for a while and he was running out of
gas. He was about to jump until a giant 15-seat car drove up next to him.
Driving the car was Jack. He opened the passenger door and yelled for Seth jump
in. Once Seth was in the car they drove towards the school district. On their
way, they called their friends and told them to come in front of the school.
Once they arrived, their 11 friends, piled into the back seats. Jack told
everyone that they were going on a road trip while running from the cops.
Before
they left town, they went through a Taco Bell drive through. They also stopped
at Wal-Mart and bought loads of snacks and movies for on the road. Just before
they reach Chicago, they stopped at a RV retailer. They bought the largest RV
with the penny they found outside the building. They then made shifts for
driving. Seconds after hitting the road again, the police were right behind
them.
Once
they reached Chicago, they stopped at a gas station and bought gas, more
movies, subs for dinner, and 2 lottery tickets. They drove for two more hours
before they found a spot to hide in a state forest. When they woke up, a cute
family of beavers was outside. Jack decided to adopt them. Once they were on their
way, they stopped at a pet store to get beaver food. Seth asked Jack how he got
all this money and he said he found it in his couch. They got McDonald’s for
breakfast and decided to drive to Maine. When they were at a gas station in
Indiana, they met Andrew Luck. He said that he wanted to come too. Seth didn’t
want him to but he gave in when he was bribed with 750,000 dollars and a shiny
penny.
Jack
decided that he wanted to go to Texas first. It was 1 A.M. when they finally
got to Dallas. Jack was walking to a Target when he ran into Tony Romo and
Jason Witten. They wanted to come too. Jack agreed under one condition, that
they would buy 3 more RVs. The next morning on the way out of town 3 more RVs
were purchased and hooked up.
Five hours
later, in Arkansas, they ran into a huge family. They called themselves the
Duggers. Tony Romo said that they have a TV show that he watches. Jason told
them to get on and it was too late for Jack to stop them. By nightfall, They
reached Greensboro, North Carolina. Theo, one of Jack’s friends, said his
cousins lived here so they went to their house. They joined the crew bringing a
fridge full of food.
The
next day they arrived in Maine at 6:30 in the afternoon. The three football
players went out fishing. They came back with 46 lobsters, 51 crabs, and 4
buckets of shrimp. The group had a feast. Just before they finished, they were surrounded
by police. One officer walked up to
Seth. He said, “Why were you running from me? I just wanted to ask you if you
were the person who caught the home run at the Brewer’s game last week.
However, since you ran from us, why don’t we have fun chasing you again. I’m
giving you 15 minutes from the time your car’s engine starts.”
Seth
told everyone to get into their assigned RV and bring some of the food and
movies with them. In 10 minutes, they were on the road again. In the car, was
Jack, Seth, Theo, and the beavers. After 15 minutes, they were almost to Canada.
Jack thought that if they drove across Canada and enter the U.S. again in
Washington, the police would have trouble finding them.
After
driving for one and ½ days without stopping, the crew had reached Seattle. It
was a Tuesday morning and the night before the Green Bay Packers had lost to
the Seahawks. Seth ran into three Seahawks players, Russell Wilson, Golden
Tate, and Marshawn Lynch. They bought another trailer and hooked it up. It was late afternoon when the group arrived
in the Rocky Mountains. The decided to build a permanent camp in a clearing the
found. In the middle of the camp, they made a semicircle of RVs around a camp
fire.
The
next morning Seth, Jack, and Matt, another friend, went to a nearby town. They
came back with two new pickup trucks plus the original car full of food. They made 50+ trips throughout the day bringing
building supplies, tools, and clothes to the base. They also brought one more
RV. By the end of the day, they had built 3 small cabins to cook in, a wall
around the base with a raising gate, and a pet hotel for the beavers.
Throughout
the next month, they had constructed a mansion that had ports for each car and
RVs to dock in and a helipad for the new helicopter they purchased. Then, after
a month of searching, the police spotted them. They were so impressed of the
fort that they asked if they could join too. Seth and Jack let them.
They grew
stronger and lived happily ever after. Except, that’s not what happenned. No one likes
stories that end that way. They colony
grew so strong that they began taking over the state of Colorado. The
government soon noticed this and began to attack them. Just before they
launched the attack, Damian Cray (from Eagle Strike Alex rider series) had
launched every missile the US owned at Colorado. The colony ended in a giant
fiery ball. The lesson here is: if you catch a home run, give the ball to the
person next to you.

Gavels and Courts
Yesterday I took a picture of a gavel. A gavel is a hammer-like object used
in courts. It made me wonder when courts first started. I also wondered why
courts use gavels. I learned a lot from researching this.
Courts
date back to as far as the Mesopotamia civilization, which started around 3500
B.C. Courts and judges at that time were based off of the Old Testament.
Nowadays, courts settle all kinds of conflicts including but not limited to car
accidents, violence, fraud, and theft. There are many courts in the United
States. The highest court is the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Each state
also has supreme courts. Court cases have made television once in a while. A
recent case on TV was Casey Anthony. There are also courts that are TV shows such as Judge Judy.
Courts have come a long way since Mesopotamia.
The
gavel has an interesting history. The first gavel dates back to Medieval
England. It was used to notify people if something other than money was used to
pay. Now, it’s used to call for attention. The saying “Order in the Court” then
follows. Gavels aren’t used only in courts. For example, The U.S. Senate uses a
gavel that was given to them in 1954 by the Republic of India. Gavels have
become very important in the court systems.
Throughout
history, courts and gavels have been important. Courts have settled arguments for
thousands of years and gavels have been drawing attention almost as long. They
will be serving that same purpose for a long time.
Dogs
Yesterday, I took a picture of a miniature dog statue.
It made me think about famous dogs in history.
Old Yeller is a yellow lab from the book ‘Old Yeller’.
The dog found his way to a family farm but had trouble fitting in. After saving
the family several times, he became part of the family. However, Old Yeller got
rabies when defending the family from a wolf.
Pluto is a well-known Disney dog belong to Goofy. Pluto
got his name because he invented shortly after the planet was discovered. Pluto
has become one of the main characters in the Mickey Mouse story.
Balto led a sled team to Nome from Anchorage to bring
medicine to people in who caught an outbreak disease. Balto is now in a museum
in Cleveland, Ohio.
Checkers is a dog that belonged to Richard Nixon. He
became famous when the then Vice-President mentioned the dog in a speech. That
speech helped him eventually become President in 1968.
As I did my research, I realized dogs have been
important throughout history. From book heroes to real heroes or everyday house
dogs, dogs will always be man’s best friend.

Rubber Duck History
Today I took a picture of a rubber
duck. It made me wondering about the history of rubber ducks. The rubber duck
dates back to the late 19th century.
It was originally made with hard rubber. Nowadays, the ducks are made of
vinyl plastic.
Although rubber ducks were created
in the 19th century, they did not become popular until 1970 when
singer Jim Henson sang ‘Rubber Duckie’. Then Sesame Street soon followed suit
giving the character Ernie a rubber duck. Rubber ducks began so popular that
rubber duck races began. The first race was held in Stockbridge, England in
1988. Some races have up to 30,000 ducks.
Because
there are 5,000 plus different ducks, many people collect them. The record for
most rubber ducks is 5,633 belonging to Charlotte Lee. Some examples of ducks
are glow in the dark, ninjas, firefighters, soldiers, and many, many more. The ducks also come in many sizes. The
smallest duck is only 2.5x2x2 cm large. The largest is over 40 feet long.
Rubber
ducks have been part of many events in history.
One of the most famous events was in 1992 when 3 containers spilled
29,000 rubber ducks off a cargo ship. These bath toys floated for years. Some
being spotted in the Arctic Circle, Greenland, Alaska, New England, United
Kingdom, Greenland, Canada, and Iceland. It was 2007 by the time all the ducks
had reached shore. England had offered a $100 savings bond to anyone who had
recovered a duck. Because of their time at sea, many ducks had turned white. This
event was the subject of the book Moby Duck by Donovan Hohn.
Rubber
ducks have been a popular bath toy for a long time. Even Queen Elizabeth ll has
a rubber duck. With races everywhere, 5000 plus different ducks, and news
stories, rubber ducks will be hard to forget.

Fall DWA
Adam was heading out of school when he was stopped by his friend
Joey. Joey handed Adam a disc at told him it was a fun game. Adam asked what
kind of game it was but Joey said he wasn’t allowed to tell. Adam really wanted
to know so he hustled to the subway station.
Once he was home, Adam tossed a frozen pizza to microwave. He
hurried upstairs to his room. In ten minutes he had finished his Spanish
homework. He brought the pizza to his room and put the disc into his computer.
the screen suddenly turned white. Dang it! he thought. He thought it was a
virus. He was so angry he was about to smash the computer but then a
large black N appeared on the screen. He clicked on it and instantly a
character appeared in the middle of a jungle. He moved his character around
using the arrow keys. He didn’t know what to do so he headed in the direction
of the sun. He couldn’t believe the graphics. It was almost as if he were the
character. After about five minutes of traveling, he came upon a snake. The
character grabbed a nearby stick at begun swinging at the dangerous creature.
The snake eventually slithered away. Then Adam had an idea. The character
quickly scaled a tree. Once at the top, he looked around. He was surrounded by
forest on three sides but he saw a castle in the direction he was already
headed. He climbed down the tree and scurried along. Another ten minutes and
the character arrived. Outside the castle was an elf. The elf silently motion
for Adam’s character to follow him into the castle. Once inside, the character
saw a few stone tablets. The first read:
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF NURAX
FOLLOW THESE RULES
DO NOT TALK ABOUT THIS GAME IN THE REAL WORLD
DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE REAL WORLD HERE
YOU HAVE ONE LIFE, IF YOU DIE YOU CANNOT REJOIN
Adam thought that was simple enough so he went on to the next
tablet. It read:
CHOOSE YOUR RACE
HUMAN
BARBARIAN
DARK ELF
WEREWOLF
VAMPIRE
CAT-PERSON
DWARF
After considering his options, he decided to become a barbarian. The next tablet said:
CHOOSE YOUR PROFESSION
KNIGHT
GUARD
ENTERTAINER
THIEVE
TRADER
WARRIOR
Adam decided to become a trader. He thought it would be an easy
way to make money. The next tablet read:
CHOOSE YOUR ABILITY
FIRE
WATER
LIGHTNING
HEALING
INVISIBILITY
SPEED
STAMINA
Adam quickly decided on healing, thinking that might also make
some money. The tablet said:
CHOOSE YOUR WEAPONS
YOU GET ONLY TWO
THEY ARE BELOW YOU
Adam looked down and saw a extremely large chest. He removed the
lid and found it full of weapons including various swords, knives, daggers,
axes, hammers, bows, and crossbows. Adam picked thin, short crossbow and a
dagger with a gold blade and steel handle wrapped in red leather. Then he came
upon the final tablet which read:
YOU ARE ABOUT TO SET OUT ON YOUR QUEST
CHOOSE YOUR NAME
Adam went online and search for a good name. He came up with
Gladius. Gladius was now headed out the door. On the way to the city Gladius
was attacked by a dark elf. Gladius began to run with the elf right behind. Then
Gladius turned around and shot, hitting the elf in the elbow and leg. Gladius
walked back to the elf. He picked up the elf’s sword, shield, helmet, and 55
gold coins. Gladius then walked off with the elf pleading for help.
Once Gladius came to the city, he was amazed. There were people
everywhere. He went up to a human trader and attempted to sell the elf’s
weapons. He made 20 gold coins for the shield and 15 for the sword. Gladius was
thirsty and hungry so he bought a meal for 5 coins. Night was drawing over the
city and Gladius need a place to stay. He found a cheap hotel and paid 15 coins
to stay the week.
Adam looked at the clock at saw it was 6:30. His parents were due
home any moment! He hurried downstairs and set the table. He had just finished when
his parents arrived. He told them he needed to study for an upcoming test and
he doesn’t want to be disturbed. Then he ran back to his computer.
Gladius was waking up. He set looking for a cart to buy.
Eventually, he discovered a cart priced at 50 coins. He approached the vender.
After a while of bargaining, Gladius bought the cart at a price of 40 coins.
Gladius had seen a sign that there were arena battles in the center of town so
he headed there. When he arrived, battles were taking place. He set up
the cart outside the arena. Soon, two injured cat-people walked out of the
arena and towards him. He asked them if they needed healing. They both said
yes. One paid 10 coins and the other a scorpion stinger. Later on, a barbarian
headed towards the arena, stopped by. He wanted the buy the stinger for 50
coins. Gladius was blown away so he agreed. Now, with 90 coins, Gladius went
around traders buying more things. Once he finished setting up his cart,
Gladius had 3 knives, an axe, a sword, two breastplates, and a helmet all for
sale and still having 35 coins left. Just before he was about to pack up, a
group of 7 made of two barbarians, three werewolves, a vampire and a human
approached his cart. They said they were going on a quest but need weapons. He sold
the axe and sword for a wish crystal. Wish crystals can grant you one wish.
Gladius packed up and headed to the hotel for the night. Then Adam logged off.
it was 10:15 and he needed sleep so he hit the hay.
Adam woke up the next day and he was sick. His mom came into the
room after Adam yelled for her. She checked his temperature and he had a fever.
He had to stay home so it opened his laptop. Gladius had decided what he would
use the crystal for. He would not sell it, he would trade it. He went to the hotel
owner and offered the crystal for the hotel and 450 coins. The owner agreed as
long as she could stay at the hotel for free. Gladius could not believe his
luck. A single traveler walked in and came up to Gladius. He said that he
needed a room for a day. Gladius offered one for 5 coins but the traveler
didn’t like that. He kick Gladius over and pulled out his knife. The blade was
coming down at Gladius. Adam couldn’t believe it was ending like this.
Suddenly, The traveler was tackled from behind. The previous owner had saved
Gladius. Gladius was so happy he was still alive. He gave the last owner 100
coins before he went on the way. Gladius came upon two dwarf traders. They were
selling many animal parts from their recent hunt. After examining their products,
he decided he might try to hire them. He asked them if they would work for
him. They agreed. They said they wanted
to buy the shack next door to his hotel and turn it into a trade store. He
walked into the building with the two dwarves and asked for the owner. A small
dark elf came up to them. Gladius told him what he’d like. The dark elf turned
it down instantly but was pulled back when he heard the price. With the dwarves
chipping in, The shack was bought for 150 coins. The elf still had part ownership
and free lodging at the hotel. Gladius asked the dwarves to bring the three
carts (Gladius’ and each of the dwarves’) inside so they could set up. The
layout of the building was near perfect. They had a room for weapons, armor,
animal parts, food, and medicine and healing. There was also two back rooms for
cooking and storage. As the trio left, they saw a fight out on the street. A
barbarian was attacking a defenseless werewolf. Gladius pulled out his crossbow
and shot the barbarian but it was too late. The human had taken an knife to the
knee. Gladius quickly ran out and began to use his healing powers on the man.
In a few minutes, he was out of pain. Gladius then began to rummage through the
barbarians gear and take anything that was useful. The man approached Gladius
to thank him. He said he owned a construction company and if he ever needed
anything, just ask. Then it hit Gladius. He asked the man if he could build a
restaurant in the empty lot next to the hotel and a back hallway connecting
them all. The man agreed and Gladius got an extreme discount with a final price
of 25 coins.
Adam looked up from the screen. He was getting hungry. He went
downstairs and warmed up leftover pasta in the microwave. After eating, Adam returned
to his computer. He asked the two dwarves to go hunting. They set out towards a
mountain range which Gladius had never noticed before. Gladius waited in the
shop until they returned about an hour later, not looking in the best
condition. Gladius asked what happened. They said that when they passed the
graveyard, they were jumped by a horde of zombies. After a long battle, They
were cornered by three remaining zombies. Out of nowhere, a cat-person jumped
from a tree and saved them. They tried to thank her but she hurried away. So
they took all of the zombies gear, which there were loads of, and headed back.
Then they ran into two bear. They shot both of them and backed them up. Then
they arrived here. Gladius healed them and everything was back to normal. The
made bear stew out of the meat and put the rest bear on sale. After selling all
of the stew out on the street, the trio had a total of 1745 coins. They all
went to sleep. When they work up, the construction crew was already working. At
their pace, they’d be done before breakfast. Gladius had thought of an idea in
his sleep. He went up to the human, the one he had saved, and asked if he could
build an arena across the street. The human agreed at a price of 350 coins.
Gladius decided he would try hunting today and asked the dwarves to watch the
buildings. Gladius then set out. After half an hour of hunting, all he had was
a squirrel. He decided the gather berries instead. He sat down and started
shoveling berries into his bag. Once he finished, he looked up and saw a heard
of deer. He raised his crossbow and shot. Four deer had fallen before they were
out of sight. Gladius was satisfied with his work and headed back to the city.
When he returned, the dwarves made venison steaks, burgers, and stew. The stew
also consisted of berries that Gladius collected. Now with plenty of food. They
opened the restaurant. They earned 435 coins in the first day alone. Adam
looked at the clock. It was 6:15. He
went downstairs and set the table.
Like always, he finished just before his parents got home. They
had minestrone for dinner then Adam went back upstairs. Once he was on his
laptop again, the arena was finished. Gladius was planning to host a arena
contest tomorrow. He had put posters all around the town. Night was drawing
over the city again and Gladius went to sleep. When he woke up, there was an
hour and a half before the contest was to commence. Gladius, along with the
dwarves, walked into the hosts’ box at the arena. Crowds were gathering and
contestants were preparing in the chambers below. 15 minutes before the contest
the contestants walked out in lines by race in the order of dark elves,
dwarves, cat-people, humans, werewolves, vampires, and finally barbarians. The
first battle was between a werewolf and a dark elf. If the werewolf won, he
would receive the elf’s knife and if the elf won, he would get 50 coins from
the werewolf. The wolf began to strike all around with the elf dodging each
attack. The elf glanced the wolf with his knife and the wolf backed off. The
elf threw his knife hitting the back leg of the wolf. The wolf turned around
and charged, knowing the elf was weaponless. Just before he was about to finish
the elf, the elf disappeared. His power must be invisibility Gladius thought.
Then the knife started to move towards the wolf. The wolf realized too late
what was happening and the elf won. Medics rushed on and brought the wolf out.
A total of 76 battles took place before the main event, the free for all.
Everyone would fight at once. Battling as many people as they want and taking
whatever they want before they chose to stop. The only rule is you may not
engage someone already in combat. At Gladius’ command, the battle begun.
Several bodies littered the ground with medics buzzing around each of them. Eventually,
all that were left was the dark elf that won the first battle, and a large
bulky barbarian. With the power of lightning, the barbarian began zapping bolts
at the elf. The elf turned invisible and charged. Still invisible, the elf
climbed the barbarian. Wisely, the barbarian drew in lightning and zapped
outward in every direction, frying the elf. The barbarian won. He took about
100 coins and left. Adam looked up at the clock. It was only 9:15 but he was
tired so he decided to go to sleep. Adam couldn’t help wondering what being in
the arena would fell like. This was the lone thought on his mind as he drifted
asleep.
The woke up the next morning worse than before. His mom brought
him cinnamon toast and orange juice. She said he would have to stay home again.
Adam didn’t have enough energy to get up so he asked his mom for his laptop.
She gave it to him before she headed out to work. Adam logged on and Gladius
was just waking up. On his bedside there was a note from the dwarves saying
they were headed out to hunt. Gladius headed downstairs to the restaurant which
was out of food so he kept it closed. He went over to the arena and went around
picking up anything he could find. He left with 2 knives, a bow, and 5 coins.
He was walking out then he saw something sparkle in the sand. Could it be? He
walked up to it. It was a wish crystal! He scooped it up and hurried over to
the shop. He had no clue what you use it for. In a few minutes, the dwarves
returned. They had been out for awhile and returned with one bear, three deer,
seven squirrels, 4 rabbits, a sack full of blueberries, blackberries,
strawberries, and cherries. Gladius couldn’t believe it. They brought it all
into the kitchen and began preparing it. Adam realized he was thirsty so he
went downstairs.
He walked up to the fridge and reach for the juice. Then he froze
in his place. Something didn’t feel right. He grabbed the phone and dialed his
mom. It was too late. All she heard was Adam scream and fall over, the phone
with him.
